On September 1, Harry boards the Hogwarts Express from Platform Nin and Three-Quarters at King's Cross, where he meets his two future best friends: Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. At Hogwarts, his new magical school, the three get sorted into Gryffindor, while a new enemy, Draco Malfoy, is put into Slytherin.
The Hogwarts staff, such as Professor Dumbledore, Snape, and McGonagall, alongside kindly groundskeeper and half-giant Hagrid, shape Harry's first year. In his final term, Harry comes face-to-face with a weakened Lord Voldemort, the Dark wizard who killed his parents, but escapes. |
Dobby, a house-elf, visits Harry to warn him that danger awaits at Hogwarts. Harry goes back regardless. At school, a message on a wall says, "The Chamber of Secrets has been opened," and Muggle-born students start getting attacked.
When Harry's classmates discover that he can speak Parseltongue - a rare trait often associated with Dark Wizards - they suspect he is the heir of Slytherin and responsible for the attacks. Harry discovers an old, magical diary by former-Hogwarts student Tom Riddle, and realizes that through it, Tom can possess Ron's sister, Ginny, to open the Chamber, unleashing a snake-like creature called a Basilisk. After a confrontation in the Chamber, Harry learns that Tom is actually a young Voldemort. |
Sirius Black, a wizard who has been imprisoned in Azkaban, escapes and is apparently pursuing Harry. Dementors, the soul-sucking guards of Azkaban, are stationed at Hogwarts to track down Sirius. The creatures affect Harry badly, who is taught the Patronus Charm by Professor Lupin to defend himself.
Harry is given the Marauder's Map, which shows the entirety of Hogwarts and movements of everyone in the school. Soon, Harry leans that Sirius was wrongly convicted and is, in fact, his godfather. Harry and Hermione travel back in time with a Time-Turner to save him (and a Hippogriff named Buckbeak), setting them both free from the Dementors' grasp. |
Over the summer, Harry attends the Quidditch World Cup. After the match, the camp is attacked, and a skull-like symbol called a Dark Mark looms overhead - the sign of Voldemort. Back at school, the Triwizard Tournament takes place, and Harry and Cedric Diggory are chosen to represent Hogwarts.
During the competition, Harry and Ron ask Parvati and Padma Patil to the Yule Ball, while Hermione attends with Bulgarian wizard Viktor Krum, the champion from the Durmstrang school. At the end of the final challenge, Harry and Cedric are tricked into touching a Portkey which transports them to a graveyard with Voldemort waiting. At Voldemort's command, Peter Pettigrew kills Cedric, while Harry escapes. Dumbledore plans for war against Voldemort. |
Harry meets the Order of the Phoenix, a secret society dedicated to defeating Voldemort. At Hogwarts, Dolores Umbridge, the new, power-hungry Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, frequently punishes Harry.
Harry assembles a new defensive spells club called Dumbledore's Army. Meanwhile, Harry is tormented with visions seeing into Voldemort's mind. In one, he sees Sirius kidnapped and tortured at the Ministry of Magic. Harry goes to save him, but the vision was a trick, planted by Voldemort. Sirius is killed in the ensuing battle. Later, Dumbledore tells Harry about the prophecy of his birth; either Harry or Voldemort must ultimately kill each other. |
Harry finds an old annotated Potions book previously owned by someone called the "Half-Blood Prince", who is later revealed to be Professor Snape. Harry and Ginny Weasley fall in love and begin a relationship.
Meanwhile, Dumbledore tells Harry that Lord Voldemort remains alive using Horcruxes; objects that contain parts of his soul. Elsewhere, Draco Malfoy successfully plans an attack on Dumbledore. Unable to kill him, Severus Snape steps in and commits the murder instead. After Dumbledore's death, Harry vows to leave Hogwarts to find and destroy the other Horcruxes. |
Lord Voldemort seizes control of the Ministry of Magic, plunging the wizarding world into grave danger. Harry, Ron, and Hermione set out to destroy Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes.
During the last stand at the Battle of Hogwarts, Serverus Snape reveals he's been in love with Harry's mother, Lily, and had been acting as a double-spy, working of Dumbledore, ever since her death. Harry sacrifices himself to Voldemort, but doesn't die, as he had been a Horcrux. Neville Longbottom destroys Nagini, Voldemort's snake. With the other Horcruxes now destroyed, Harry finally kills Voldemort. Friends are lost, but the wizarding world is safe. |
Now a father to James, Albus and Lily, Harry works as Head of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic and is married to Ginny Weasley.
Harry struggles with the demands of parenting while still fighting against the forces of Dark Magic, memories from his childhood and the pain and death he endured growing up and facing Voldemort, continue to haunt his thoughts. Despite this, Harry is now a grown man devoted to his family, wife and friends, and as ever, the importance of good over evil. |
Hermione is now the Minister for Magic and is a strong leader, not afraid to stand up and confront issues her predecessors tried to ignore. She is married to Ron and has two children, a daughter Rose and a son Hugo, whom she adores.
Her close friendship to Harry remains as they work together as a team at the Ministry. Her fond frustrations with her husband Ron remind us of the many squabbles they’ve had at school, but their devotion to each other is clear. |
A loving father and husband, Ron has two children that he looks after alongside running his own joke shop, Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes.
Affable as ever, Ron is a stalwart friend to Harry and a reliable and affectionate husband to Hermione. As in his youth, Ron is determined and quick to offer help to support Harry and defend the Wizarding World. |
Married to Harry, Ginny works as a sports editor for the Daily Prophet. She stands alongside Harry as a supportive wife but also has to show great patience as he struggles with his relationship with his son Albus, while still grappling with his past.
She understands Harry’s troubled sleep and dreams and knows when he is not being totally open with her. |
Just as devoted to his family as Harry Potter, Draco Malfoy is utterly committed to protecting his son Scorpius whilst battling against rumors about him and his parentage.
Draco continues to mistrust Harry Potter and his many successes and openly attacks the decisions of the Ministry of Magic to try and get them to do what he thinks best. Always immaculately dressed, Draco reveals that for all his appearances of anger, his actions are just as rooted in love and family as the other characters. |
The middle child of Harry Potter, Albus struggles with the weight of his father’s reputation and past. He doesn’t fit into Hogwarts in the way he thinks is expected of him. Surprised to find himself placed in Slytherin, he forms a close friendship with Scorpius Malfoy, Draco’s son.
Determined to prove himself, Albus is quick-witted and brave though perhaps shows some of the recklessness his father occasionally showed in his youth, trying to solve problems without fully grasping the dangers and consequences. Much of the trouble with his father stems from Albus wanting to be his own man while also wanting to know his father more closely. |
Extremely bright, clever and well-read, Scorpius can’t wait to begin life at Hogwarts and all that will entail, but he is well-aware of the rumors that surround his parentage.
Close to his mother and keen to impress his father, he has a great deal to endure but reveals himself to be a devoted friend, brave wizard and extremely optimistic and enthusiastic young man. Scorpius is a character who never gives up and isn’t afraid to speak his mind when necessary. |
Ambitious, clever and hard-working, Rose shares many of her attributes with her mother, Hermione and her father, Ron. She is eager to get to Hogwarts and begin her life there.
Rose tries to remain friends with her cousin Albus, and despite drifting apart during the course of the action, it is clear she is likely to remain part of Albus’ life, and perhaps Scorpius’, forever. |
